AIFA approves reimbursement for vamorolone in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved the reimbursement of vamorolone through the National Health Service (SSN) for patients suffering from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The decision applies to patients aged four years and older, including those new to treatment and those already stabilized on traditional corticosteroids.
Vamorolone, an orphan drug developed by Santhera Pharmaceuticals, is a steroid anti-inflammatory designed to improve the tolerability profile of standard corticosteroid therapy. While maintaining anti-inflammatory efficacy by binding to the same glucocorticoid receptors, it acts downstream to reduce gene transcription pathways associated with common side effects.
Clinical data suggests that vamorolone offers comparable efficacy to conventional steroids but with a significant reduction in systemic side effects, such as growth delays, pubertal development issues, and bone fractures. This provides a therapeutic alternative aimed at improving the long-term quality of life for young patients with this rare genetic muscle disease.
