AIFA approves upadacitinib reimbursement for adolescents with atopic dermatitis

The Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has approved reimbursement for upadacitinib in Italy for the treatment of moderate to severe atopic dermatitis in adolescents aged 12 and older who are candidates for systemic therapy. Upadacitinib is a selective oral JAK inhibitor.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by eczema and persistent itching. In adolescents, the condition can impact sleep, concentration, and social or school life. The approval follows European authorization based on clinical programs, including Measure Up 1, Measure Up 2, and Ad Up, which studied the drug in over 2,500 adult and adolescent patients.

Giovanni Pellacani, president of Sidemast, noted that expanding therapeutic options is significant for patients and families, allowing for more personalized treatment paths through specialized centers.
