AI‑generated “AI Slop” overwhelms TikTok feeds and smartphone content

A surge of low‑quality, AI‑generated material—dubbed “AI Slop”—is flooding digital platforms. Researchers report that nearly 60% of videos shown to newly‑registered TikTok users are created wholly or partially by generative AI tools, with creators mass‑producing short clips using automated script writers, synthetic voice‑overs and stock footage. The same trend is seen on smartphones, where large language models generate bulk articles, product descriptions and social‑media posts that populate feeds, search results and apps. Users experience reduced content quality, “hallucinations” of false facts, and higher risk of AI‑driven scams. Platforms are responding: TikTok has introduced mandatory labeling for AI‑generated videos, but the volume outpaces moderation efforts, while Google has warned that AI‑driven SEO manipulation violates its quality guidelines. Both the TikTok ecosystem and broader mobile browsing experience are seeing increased user fatigue and difficulty distinguishing authentic human‑created content from algorithmic filler.
