AI‑generated deepfakes raise election disinformation risks in Latin America

Experts warn that generative artificial intelligence is reshaping electoral processes across Latin America by making false content cheaper, faster and more convincing. Dr. Kervin Casas‑Zamora, secretary‑general of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA International), said AI‑driven misinformation intensifies political polarization and urged parties and candidates to disclose any AI‑generated material used in campaigns.

Regulators, data‑protection authorities and electoral bodies in several countries have called for urgent safeguards, including transparent labeling of AI‑created content, mandatory identification mechanisms, and stronger verification tools. A 2026 joint statement by more than 60 privacy authorities urged AI developers to embed safeguards by design. The growing use of deepfakes in recent elections has prompted calls for clear legal frameworks to protect the integrity of democratic processes.
