Aiguille du Midi ice cave in Mont Blanc weakened by heat, secured on Aug 4
The ice vault on the Aiguille du Midi, a 3,842‑metre‑high cave that serves as a launch point for alpinists in the Mont Blanc massif, has become severely fragile because of a recent drought and unusually high temperatures in Haute‑Savoie. The Compagnie du Mont‑Blanc announced that a security operation will take place on Tuesday 4 August to consolidate the structure. During the operation access to the classic Aiguille du Midi ridge will be closed for the whole day, and climbers are urged not to equip or park beneath the weakened ice vault.
Local authorities have placed the area under orange heat vigilance, noting that the zero‑degree isotherm now sits around 4,300 m. The Compagnie advises alpinists to use a nearby, more protected gallery and to be proficient in crampon techniques if they attempt the route. The measures aim to prevent accidents as the summer heat continues to affect high‑altitude environments in the region.
