India and Vietnam strengthen strategic and defence ties at BRICS Summit

On the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India and Vietnam held several high-level meetings to strengthen their bilateral ties across multiple sectors.

In the realm of defence and security, officials from both nations agreed to deepen their Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Discussions focused on accelerating defence technology sharing, expanding maritime cooperation, and advancing defence industrial collaboration. Both countries emphasized the importance of a stable, rules-based regional security architecture in the Indo-Pacific and committed to closer coordination through the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) framework. They also scheduled the next Defence Policy Dialogue to take place in India during Aero India 2027.

Diplomatically, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed shared interests in maintaining peace, stability, and strategic autonomy. Meanwhile, Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung met with AIIB President Chau Gia Di to request continued support for Vietnam’s strategic infrastructure development, specifically targeting green energy transition, urban development, and regional connectivity.
