Azerbaijan advances infrastructure, energy, and aviation sectors
Azerbaijan is advancing several major infrastructure and economic initiatives. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $302.38 million loan to modernize the Baku Metro. This project, part of a larger $2.6 billion expansion program, aims to digitize operations, upgrade signaling systems, and construct new stations and tunnels to improve safety and capacity.
In the energy sector, Azerbaijan aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 8 GW by 2032. This includes plans to develop 6 GW of solar and wind power by 2030. Additionally, the AIIB and Azerbaijan have signed grant agreements totaling $1.1 million to support the Caspian Green Energy Corridor, which involves a submarine electricity cable connecting Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) reported strong growth for the first nine months of 2026, serving nearly 3.3 million passengers across 14,100 flights. The airline has expanded its route network to include destinations like Kars and Brussels, while introducing new digital payment and booking services.
On the diplomatic front, President Ilham Aliyev and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet met in Baku to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and energy security.
