AIIMS Bhubaneswar to establish Skin Bank and Tissue Transplantation Unit

The Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneswar celebrated its 10th anniversary with a National CME programme and Live Surgical Workshop focused on secondary procedures in brachial plexus injury. The event, held on August 21-22, 2026, hosted over 100 surgeons and specialists from across India.

Over the past decade, the 36-bedded Burn Centre has treated more than 1,500 burn patients and performed over 7,000 reconstructive and corrective surgeries. These procedures include 500 microsurgeries, 300 brachial plexus reconstructions, 300 congenital anomaly corrections, and approximately 3,000 trauma cases.

Future expansion plans for the department include the establishment of a Skin Bank and Tissue Transplantation Unit, the initiation of hand transplantation, and the development of specialized subspecialty clinics. The institution also aims to expand hyperbaric oxygen therapy and strengthen simulation-based surgical training to become a Centre of Excellence in burn care.
