AIIMS Delhi doctors perform complex laparoscopic hysterectomy
Doctors at AIIMS in New Delhi have successfully performed a laparoscopic hysterectomy on a 44-year-old woman presenting with extreme medical complexities. The patient, who stands 98 cm tall and weighs 22 kg, suffered from severe osteoporosis, hypertension, and debilitating menstrual pain caused by deep pelvic endometriosis and adenomyosis.
Due to the patient's fragile bone structure, the surgical team had to avoid the standard lithotomy position to prevent fractures to her lower back and thigh bones. The procedure was complicated by limited abdominal space and the enlarged uterus being adhered to surrounding intestines.
A multidisciplinary team of specialists in gynecology, endocrinology, and anesthesia managed the case. The anesthesia team utilized an ultrasound-guided abdominal block instead of an epidural and carefully calculated drug doses based on the patient's weight. The 90-minute minimally invasive surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged three days after the procedure.
