University of Wyoming student arrested for allegedly poisoning colleague

Aili Wang, a 32-year-old Chinese microbiology graduate student at the University of Wyoming, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on October 6 while allegedly attempting to flee to China. Wang faces felony aggravated assault and battery charges for allegedly poisoning a fellow researcher's tea with acrylamide, a neurotoxic chemical.

The victim, a Vietnamese national identified as K.T., is a researcher working on patent-pending technology for cancer, neurological, and genetic disease treatments. The poisoning was discovered after K.T. experienced unexplained symptoms, including extreme fatigue, insomnia, and numbness, starting in August. The presence of acrylamide was detected in the water of a coffee maker used by the victim.

Investigators used surveillance footage to observe Wang rummaging through the victim's desk and manipulating research notebooks. Authorities also allege that Wang purchased acrylamide via eBay on two separate occasions and subsequently attempted to delete her account to conceal the purchase. The victim's supervising professor, Mark Gomelsky, expressed profound shock at the incident, noting that the victim's full recovery remains uncertain.
