AIMA workers launch 24-hour national strike in Portugal

Workers at the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) in Portugal are conducting a 24-hour national strike on October 6. The industrial action, called by the Migration Technicians’ Union (STM), aims to address several structural issues and demands.

Key demands include the creation of a specific technical career for migration workers and the implementation of a salary supplement equivalent to those received by the GNR and PSP for border control duties. The union also seeks an end to the precarious employment of cultural mediators and a significant increase in technical and human resources to manage the agency’s workload.

The strike follows a period of internal instability at AIMA, including the departure of its president, Pedro Portugal Gaspar. The STM has criticized the government for failing to respond to urgent requests for meetings to discuss these professional and remunerative improvements. The strike is expected to disrupt services at AIMA service counters and offices across the country, including locations in Funchal.
