China accelerates military research into humanoid robots
China is accelerating the transition of humanoid robot technology from commercial and research laboratories to military training environments. An investigation of over 100 military procurement documents, patents, and academic studies indicates that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is actively researching the military applications of these machines, with a particular focus on urban warfare scenarios. Research conducted by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) has modeled combat scenarios where humanoid and other robotic platforms work alongside ground troops to clear buildings floor by floor.
This military push is supported by China's massive industrial dominance in the sector; BofA Global Research estimates that Chinese manufacturers accounted for approximately 95% of global humanoid robot deliveries in 2025. This commercial scale provides the PLA with direct access to advanced hardware and rapid development cycles. While recent demonstrations, such as the World Humanoid Robot Games, showcased robots capable of high-speed running and complex physical tasks, technical hurdles remain. Current limitations include physical instability on irregular terrain, limited autonomy, and high energy consumption, meaning armed humanoid robots are not yet deployed in active combat units.
Separately, the robotics industry is seeing significant commercial expansion. AiMOGA Robotics has reported shipping over 2,000 units to more than 60 countries, targeting sectors like retail, public services, and medical guidance. Meanwhile, the industry is evolving toward a more architectural approach to 'general purpose' robotics, with companies like Ant Group's Lingbo Technology releasing open-source models to unify control across diverse robotic configurations.
