Air Canada loses Alberta woman's husband's ashes during travel

Twyla Shannahan, a resident of northern Alberta, arranged to transport the cremated remains of her husband, Lawrence Shannahan, from Edmonton to Newfoundland for scattering. At Edmonton International Airport she was instructed to place the ashes in a checked bag, which was subsequently misplaced and later found in Montreal. After retrieving the remains, Air Canada offered a $200 travel voucher and stated that cremated remains are permitted as carry‑on baggage if they meet security requirements. A spokesperson for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority said that transport depends on successful screening. Shannahan, who worked in health and safety, called for airlines to review and improve policies to prevent similar incidents.
