Air China safety rating downgraded by AirlineRatings

AirlineRatings has reduced Air China’s safety rating from seven to six stars following observations made during flight CA848 from London Gatwick to Shanghai Pudong. The decision, announced on October 21, follows an audit of an Airbus A350-900 flight on October 19.

The auditor reported deficiencies regarding turbulence management and the use of portable batteries. Specifically, the crew reportedly allowed a passenger to charge a device using an external battery after the seat's electrical port failed. Additionally, passengers were observed standing during persistent turbulence; while an announcement was made for passengers to sit and fasten seatbelts, the auditor noted a lack of subsequent intervention to ensure those in the aisles complied.

AirlineRatings stated that lowering a rating based on a single flight is an exceptional measure. The platform will reconsider the rating if the airline provides evidence of improved procedures. This rating change is a private evaluation and does not constitute a formal sanction or suspension by aviation authorities.
