Air Conditioner Risks in Heat: Fire Hazards and Legionella Outbreaks

Experts warn that extreme summer temperatures above 40 °C increase the risk of fires from air‑conditioner units that are poorly maintained, have loose electrical connections, or are overloaded with other high‑power devices. Regular maintenance, inspection of wiring, and operating units at reasonable temperature settings can markedly reduce this danger.

Health officials also highlight the threat of Legionella pneumophila, the bacterium that causes Legionnaires’ disease, which can proliferate in the moist, warm environment of air‑conditioning systems. The illness can produce high fever, cough, and severe respiratory symptoms, especially in people with weakened immunity, chronic lung or kidney disease, or those undergoing chemotherapy. Proper cleaning of filters and avoidance of aerosol exposure are recommended to prevent infections.
