Air‑conditioning systems are split into an indoor (cold) unit and an outdoor (hot) unit. The indoor unit contains the evaporator and fan that absorb heat from the room air and circulate cooled air. The outdoor unit houses the compressor, condenser and fan that release the absorbed heat to the outside environment. This division allows the compressor, which generates most noise, to be placed outside, resulting in a quieter indoor space. Separating the components also improves heat‑exchange efficiency, reduces electricity consumption, and extends the system’s lifespan because each unit can operate under optimal conditions. Maintenance is simpler since each part can be accessed independently, and the design prevents the heat removed from the room from being immediately returned, which would otherwise negate cooling.
