Heating maintenance tips to reduce energy bills and improve air quality

As the heating season approaches, experts recommend proactive maintenance of heating and cooling systems to ensure efficiency and reduce energy costs.

For air conditioning units used for heating, cleaning filters is essential. The U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR warn that dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing systems to work harder, which increases electricity bills and can lead to unpleasant odors or reduced heating effectiveness. Regular maintenance also prevents the buildup of mold, bacteria, and pollen within the unit, which can be circulated throughout the home.

Regarding traditional radiators, maintenance involves cleaning dust from surfaces and fins to improve airflow and air quality. It is also advised to check for air bubbles, which may require bleeding the radiator, and to ensure thermostatic valves move freely. Setting thermostatic heads to the highest level during the summer can prevent valves from seizing, though this will not activate heating if the main source is off.
