Air conditioning maintenance and respiratory health
Proper maintenance of air conditioning units and fans is essential for removing dust, mites, viruses, and fungi, which helps create a healthier environment and extends the lifespan of the appliances. For air conditioners, it is recommended to wash filters with neutral detergent and seek professional cleaning at least once a year. Fans should have their grilles and blades cleaned regularly, ensuring that water does not reach the motor.
Inadequate use of air conditioning can negatively impact respiratory health by drying out nasal mucous membranes and spreading dust in enclosed spaces. Leandro Saldivar, a nursing coordinator at Unopar University, warns that poorly cleaned filters and low humidity can cause discomfort in the airways, particularly for individuals with chronic rhinitis or sinusitis.
To mitigate these risks, experts suggest maintaining moderate temperatures, frequently cleaning carpets and curtains to reduce airborne particles, and ensuring natural ventilation by opening windows to renew the air.
