Yale study: Air conditioning prevents 5,000+ annual US heat deaths
A Yale University study published in Nature Health reveals that air conditioning use reduces heat-related mortality in the United States by 57%, preventing approximately 5,267 deaths annually. Analyzing 30 million death records across 3,108 counties from 2010 to 2020, researchers found that actual usage of cooling systems is a more accurate predictor of survival than mere ownership, as many households struggle with energy costs.
The protective benefits are most concentrated in Florida, the Southwest, and the Gulf Coast. However, the study notes that the life-saving effect tends to plateau after a certain level of use, and extreme temperature spikes can still increase mortality risks even with air conditioning active.
Additionally, the use of air conditioning presents an environmental paradox. While it protects individuals from heat stress, the process of expelling heat from indoors to the outdoors contributes to the urban heat island effect. This can raise ambient temperatures in densely populated cities, potentially creating a cycle where increased outdoor heat leads to higher air conditioning demand.
