Air conditioning usage guidelines for health and efficiency

Proper use of air conditioning is essential for managing heat waves and maintaining energy efficiency. Experts recommend maintaining indoor temperatures between 24°C and 27°C. Setting the temperature even one degree lower can increase energy consumption by 8%, and maintaining a difference of more than 6-8°C between indoor and outdoor environments can increase the risk of respiratory issues and thermal shock.

From a health perspective, the Sociedad Española de Medicina de Familia y Comunitaria (semFYC) warns that inadequate climate control can lead to dry mucous membranes, throat irritation, and general discomfort. Sudden temperature changes may cause blood pressure alterations, extreme fatigue, dizziness, and headaches, which are particularly dangerous for the elderly, children, pregnant women, and those with chronic cardiovascular or respiratory diseases.

To ensure system efficiency and air quality, regular maintenance is required. This includes cleaning or replacing filters every one to three months, cleaning evaporator and condenser coils annually, and ensuring refrigerant levels are adequate to prevent leaks.
