Air conditioning usage impacts public health and energy consumption
Rising temperatures and the effects of El Niño are driving increased demand for cooling systems, presenting both life-saving benefits and environmental challenges. A study published in Nature Health regarding air conditioning use in the United States between 2010 and 2020 indicates that these systems prevent more than 5,000 heat-related deaths annually.
However, air conditioning contributes to the urban heat island effect by transferring heat from indoors to the outdoors and increasing energy demand. In regions like Rondônia, Brazil, experts from Energisa Rondônia suggest that simple habit changes can mitigate rising energy costs. Recommendations include maintaining air conditioners at 23°C, cleaning filters regularly, and ensuring doors and windows remain closed during operation.
Other efficiency tips include turning off fans when rooms are unoccupied, avoiding frequent refrigerator door openings, and consolidating the use of heavy appliances like washing machines and irons to optimize energy consumption.
