Air coolers and fans offer efficient cooling options
Air coolers use evaporative (adiabatic) cooling, drawing warm indoor air through a water‑filled filter to reduce room temperature by up to five degrees Celsius and are typically 10‑times cheaper than conventional air‑conditioning units. They are best suited for dry environments and spaces of 20‑40 m², while larger industrial‑type units can serve areas over 100 m².
Fans do not lower ambient temperature; instead they move air across the skin, enhancing the evaporation of sweat and creating a perceived cooling effect. The motor in a fan adds a small amount of heat, but the net benefit comes from increased convective heat loss. Adding a misting device supplies fine water droplets, boosting evaporation especially in low‑humidity conditions and further improving comfort.
Together, fans and misting systems can provide an affordable and practical alternative to air‑conditioners for households facing heat waves.
