Air defense capabilities shift as Russia acquires new Pancir systems and Ukraine faces missile shortages

The Russian military has received new versions of the Pancir short-range air defense system, according to High-Precision Systems. The delivery includes the mobile Pancir-S, which utilizes both missiles and 30 mm automatic cannons, and the stationary Pancir-SMD, which relies solely on missiles and can carry up to 48 smaller rockets designed to counter drones.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is facing a critical shortage of ammunition for its Patriot missile defense systems. Despite possessing these highly effective tools for intercepting ballistic missiles, some systems have remained inactive for weeks due to a global scarcity of interceptors. This shortage is partly attributed to high consumption rates by the United States and its allies in the Persian Gulf.

Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, have emphasized the urgent need for additional supplies, noting that the country currently holds only about one percent of the American missile reserves required to survive the winter.
