Air Force reviews benefits case for widow of airman killed in Iraq

The U.S. Air Force is reviewing the case of Libby Klinner, the widow of Maj. Alex Klinner, who was killed in March during a KC-135 refueling mission in western Iraq supporting operations against Iran. Klinner reported that she was initially denied certain benefits, including hazard pay and combat-related tax breaks, because a military officer stated the country was “not at war.”

Following a viral social media post by Klinner, the Air Force reached out to clarify that her husband’s final paycheck would include all eligible benefits. Vice President JD Vance stated that the administration intends to ensure she receives everything she is entitled to, though he rejected the use of the term “war” to describe current U.S. military actions in Iran, noting there is “no active shooting.”

The situation has drawn attention to the administration's refusal to officially label the ongoing conflict with Iran as a war. This comes amid reports of broader military funding issues, including claims of payroll shortfalls in the Navy due to the reallocation of funds to support the conflict.
