Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson dies in Texas rappelling accident

Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a highly decorated 15-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, died following a fatal rappelling accident at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, during a pregame ceremony titled ‘Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans’ ahead of a football game between the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the Navy.

Patterson, a Tactical Air Control Party instructor assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, fell approximately 170 feet from the stadium rafters during the demonstration. Witnesses and social media footage showed the airman descending rapidly toward the field in front of a crowd of over 23,000 people. Emergency responders provided immediate medical attention on the field before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later passed away.

The U.S. Air Force has launched an official investigation to determine the cause of the fall. Brig. Gen. Scott C. Mills, 57th Wing commander, expressed that the tragedy is ‘felt deeply across the 57th Wing.’ The football game was delayed for approximately 10 minutes following the accident but proceeded as scheduled. UTSA has provided counseling resources to students following the event.
