Iranian aviation faces regional flight suspensions amid new US sanctions
New United States sanctions targeting the Iranian aviation sector have triggered widespread flight suspensions across the Middle East and surrounding regions. The measures, which target 27 Iranian airlines and various service providers, aim to isolate Iran’s aviation industry by threatening any entity providing fuel, landing, or ground services with exclusion from the US dollar-based financial system.
In response to these sanctions, several countries have already implemented restrictions. The United Arab Emirates has suspended all flights operated by Iranian airlines to and from its territory. Iraq has also taken action, with Najaf International Airport suspending all Iranian flights as of early Friday, September 25, following similar restrictions at Baghdad International Airport. Other nations reported to have restricted or suspended Iranian carrier access include Oman, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Turkmenistan.
Iranian officials have reacted strongly to the measures. Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to the Supreme Leader, warned that if Iran is denied access to regional airspace and airport services, no other country in the region will be permitted to enjoy those rights either. Despite the broad restrictions, some smaller Iranian airlines continue to operate flights to destinations such as China and Armenia.
