Air fryer safety: Risks of reheating rice and other foods

Experts have issued warnings regarding the use of air fryers for reheating certain foods, specifically highlighting food safety and texture concerns.

Rice is identified as a high-risk food. It may contain Bacillus cereus spores that survive the cooking process. If cooked rice is left at room temperature for too long, bacteria can multiply and produce toxins that cause food poisoning. Because some of these toxins are heat-resistant, reheating in an air fryer may not make the food safe. Additionally, the intense airflow of an air fryer can leave rice dry or hard.

Other foods that are not ideal for air fryer reheating include saucy dishes like curries or stews, which can splatter, and soups, which may spill inside the appliance. For safe reheating, the Food Standards Agency recommends ensuring food reaches a core temperature of at least 75°C for 30 seconds.
