Air fryer usage: Risks and effects of using baking paper
Using baking paper in an air fryer can simplify cleaning by collecting grease and food residue, but it may impact cooking quality and safety. Because air fryers rely on rapid hot air circulation, placing large sheets of paper in the basket can block airflow, resulting in food that is less evenly cooked and less crispy.
Safety is a primary concern. Placing loose paper in an empty, powered-on air fryer is dangerous, as the internal fan can blow the paper into the heating element, potentially causing it to scorch or catch fire. Manufacturers like Philips advise against using paper in many of their models for this reason, while others suggest using it only when weighted down by sufficient food.
Testing shows that the placement of the paper significantly affects results. Using perforated paper directly under food can cause it to wrinkle and trap moisture, leading to less crispy textures. Placing paper at the very bottom of the basket, underneath the cooking grate, may help collect some debris without obstructing the airflow as severely, though it does not eliminate the need for cleaning the basket.
