Air India flight AI2379 suffers hydraulic failure and 300-foot altitude drop

An Air India Airbus A320neo, flying flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi on August 4, experienced a critical technical failure that caused the aircraft to drop approximately 300 feet in altitude. A preliminary technical assessment by Airbus revealed that all three hydraulic systems—green, blue, and yellow—failed in rapid succession, resulting in a loss of control over key flight surfaces, including elevators and ailerons, for approximately four seconds.

During the incident, the autopilot system disconnected. The sudden descent and subsequent recovery caused injuries to approximately 20 to 24 passengers and four cabin crew members. While Air India initially attributed the altitude change to brief in-flight turbulence, maintenance reports and technical data indicate a series of hydraulic faults and flight control warnings.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the investigation into the incident, with technical assistance from France’s Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis (BEA). Investigators are examining system data, maintenance records, and human factors. Separately, the pilot-in-command is under scrutiny after testing positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test, though officials have noted no direct link established between the test result and the technical failure.
