Eurowings faces cost crisis and flight cuts amid rising fuel prices

Eurowings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, is facing severe financial pressure due to soaring kerosene prices, which have exceeded the company's budget by approximately 250 million euros. In response, the airline is considering implementing short-time work (Kurzarbeit) for its staff during the winter months and is in discussions with the German Federal Employment Agency.

The airline also plans to reduce its winter flight program by about 5 percent. Specific measures include the cancellation of direct flights to Dubai from Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart. Additionally, the company aims to reduce administrative costs, including a plan to cut around 100 administrative positions by the end of 2028.

Separately, data from the German Aviation Association (BDL) highlights a broader decline in the German aviation sector. Since 2019, the number of annual flights at German airports has dropped by 300,000, representing an 18 percent decrease. This decline is accompanied by a loss of over 35 million available seats, contrasting with growth seen in other parts of Europe.
