Air India names former Ethiopian Airlines chief Tewolde Gebremariam as new CEO

Air India has appointed Tewolde Gebremariam, the long‑time chief executive of Ethiopian Airlines, as its chief executive officer and managing director. The move follows the resignation of Campbell Wilson and is presented as the start of a “critical execution and expansion” phase for the Tata‑owned carrier. Gebremariam brings more than three decades of aviation experience, having grown Ethiopian Airlines into Africa’s largest airline group. Air India, which posted a loss of about $1.25 billion in the 2024/25 fiscal year and a further $2.8 billion for the year ending March 2026, is seeking to stabilise operations after a series of setbacks, including a fatal Dreamliner crash in June 2025 and higher fuel costs from longer routes. Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the airline’s turnaround could take five to ten years, and highlighted Gebremariam’s track record in safety, fleet expansion and hub development as key to the carrier’s future growth.
