Air India pilot tests positive for drugs after mid-air altitude drop

The pilot-in-command of an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi has reportedly tested positive for marijuana following a mid-air incident on August 4. The Airbus A320 aircraft experienced a sudden altitude drop of approximately 300 feet during cruise, an event that resulted in injuries to 17 passengers and crew members.

Following the initial screening, which yielded a “not negative” result, a confirmatory laboratory test reportedly confirmed the presence of the substance. Both pilots involved have been removed from flying duties pending the investigation. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is leading the probe into the cause of the altitude loss, with assistance from Airbus and France’s BEA.

The Civil Aviation Ministry has summoned Air India’s outgoing CEO, Campbell Wilson, regarding the incident. Meanwhile, the Airline Pilots’ Association of India has issued an advisory urging the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to maintain confidentiality and avoid labeling results as confirmed until official verification is complete.
