Air India to add 60 new aircraft to fleet within 18 months

Air India, now owned by the Tata Group, announced a major fleet‑modernisation plan. Over the next 18 months the airline expects to incorporate 50–60 new aircraft, part of a larger 600‑aircraft order that has seen less than 10 % of deliveries to date. The incoming planes will include 10–15 wide‑body jets and 45–50 narrow‑body types, allowing the carrier to replace older models and standardise its fleet.

Chief Commercial Officer and Air India Express Chairman Nipun Agrawal said the company has faced supply‑chain disruptions, rising fuel costs, air‑space constraints and geopolitical tensions, but the transformation programme remains on track. Upgrades to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner are slated for completion by mid‑next year, while Boeing MAX‑8 deliveries continue as scheduled and MAX‑10 deliveries will begin after certification. The airline also plans to synchronise its entire Air India Express fleet by March next year and is strengthening its network after a temporary reduction in service caused by fuel‑price spikes and regional tensions.
