Air Madagascar rebrands from Madagascar Airlines
The national carrier has officially reverted to its historic name, Air Madagascar, following five years of operating as Madagascar Airlines. The rebranding, effective as of October 31, 2026, was marked by official ceremonies in Antananarivo attended by government officials, including Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison.
The transition follows a period of significant financial and operational instability. Under the Madagascar Airlines brand, the company faced substantial losses, reportedly totaling approximately $25 million in both 2022 and 2023, alongside debts reaching $36 million over an eighteen-month period. Previous restructuring efforts aimed to modernize the fleet and stabilize finances, but were hampered by high aircraft leasing costs and the suspension of long-haul flights.
To support the relaunch, the government and leadership have emphasized regional connectivity and economic development. Prime Minister Rajaonarison noted that the brand symbolizes national identity, while Director General Rado Rabarilala highlighted the importance of air travel for mobility and trade. Plans include the acquisition of new aircraft and the resumption of specific regional routes, such as the Antananarivo-Mahajanga-Moroni connection.
