Air New Zealand and Hong Kong International Airport earn IATA One ID certification

Air New Zealand and Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) have become the first organizations globally to achieve IATA One ID Certification across all applicable operational areas. The certification validates that their digital identity and biometric systems meet international standards set by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The One ID initiative aims to streamline the passenger journey by allowing travelers to verify their identity and documents before arriving at the airport. This enables passengers to move through checkpoints using facial recognition technology, reducing the need to repeatedly present physical passports and boarding passes.

HKIA’s biometric system, ‘Smart Check-in’, has already been used by over 93 million passengers since its launch in 2021. The certification covers four core areas: Digitalization of Admissibility, Contactless Travel, Biometric Handling, and Privacy, Consent, and Governance. IATA officials noted that the certification provides necessary assurance regarding how biometric data is handled and how privacy is protected during the travel process.
