Air Pollution and Vaping Linked to Increased Cancer Risks

A 2026 study of more than 650,000 participants identified clonal hematopoiesis, an age‑related blood condition, as a factor that heightens susceptibility to lung cancer caused by air pollution. Researchers said the condition may cause altered immune responses that amplify inflammation in the lungs, helping explain why exposure to the same polluted air can lead to cancer in some individuals but not others.

A separate U.S. analysis of national health survey data from 2015‑2023 found that rising e‑cigarette use could lower future smoking‑related cancer rates. The study reported a sharp decline in traditional cigarette smoking, especially among adults aged 18‑34, while exclusive vaping increased. Dual use of cigarettes and e‑cigarettes remained low (2‑3%). However, adults over 55 were far less likely to switch, prompting concerns about missed opportunities for cancer prevention.
