Air pollution levels rise across South Asia as smog season begins

Air pollution levels are escalating across South Asia as the winter smog season approaches. In Pakistan, Lahore was ranked as the second most polluted major city globally by IQAir, recording an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 199. Other districts in the Punjab province, such as Pakpattan and Multan, also reported high pollution levels with AQIs exceeding 200.

In India, medical experts are warning of the long-term respiratory risks posed by rising smog. Doctors emphasize that children are particularly vulnerable because their lungs and airways are still developing. Repeated exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can impair lung growth and breathing capacity, potentially leading to chronic health issues that persist into adulthood.
