Air pollution levels rise in Delhi and Lucknow

Air quality has deteriorated significantly in Delhi and Lucknow, with pollution levels reaching hazardous thresholds. In Delhi, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 373, placing much of the capital in the very poor to severe categories. Specific areas such as Punjabi Bagh, Jahangirpuri, and IIT Delhi reported AQI levels exceeding 440, indicating severe health risks.

In Lucknow, a report from the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) for the post-monsoon period of September to October 2026 shows a marked increase in particulate matter compared to the previous year. The industrial area of Amausi recorded the highest pollution levels. Residential areas saw PM10 levels rise by 26.20 percent and PM2.5 levels increase by 8.20 percent. Industrial zones experienced the largest increase in PM10, rising by 33.40 percent compared to last year. While sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide levels remained within permissible limits, the rise in dust particles remains a major concern.
