Air pollution linked to increased nighttime coughing in new study
An international study involving the University of Cambridge, Tsinghua University, and the sleep technology company Sleep Cycle has linked short-term increases in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) to higher rates of nighttime coughing.
By analyzing data from approximately 100,000 app users across 32 cities in 12 countries over a 500-day period, researchers found that a rise of 10 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic metre was associated with a 2.4% increase in coughing over the following five days. Notably, these effects were observed even in cities where pollution levels remained below the World Health Organization’s recommended daily limits.
The study, published in the journal Communications Health, accounted for variables such as weather and influenza levels. The findings suggest that even modest fluctuations in air quality can lead to respiratory irritation and sleep disruption, as many coughing episodes occurred during sleep.
