Air pollution reaches hazardous levels in parts of Indonesia

Air quality across several Indonesian regions has reached hazardous levels. In Jakarta, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 156 on Thursday morning, ranking it as the fifth worst city globally. This level is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, with PM2.5 concentrations reaching 63 micrograms per cubic meter.

More severe conditions are reported in parts of Kalimantan and Sumatra. Murung Raya Regency in Central Kalimantan recorded an Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU) of 1,472, driven primarily by PM10. Other areas in Central Kalimantan, such as South Barito and East Kotawaringin, also reported extremely high pollution levels. In West Kalimantan, Pontianak recorded an ISPU of 531, while Padang in West Sumatra reached 324.

The Ministry of Environment has advised the public to avoid outdoor activities, particularly sensitive groups, due to the serious health risks posed by these hazardous levels. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors and use masks if they must go outside.
