Air Pollution Threatens Global Health as VisionAir Card Game Promotes Cleaner Air
Air pollution remains a leading public‑health challenge, with the World Health Organization estimating that around seven million people die prematurely each year from polluted air. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and increase the risk of respiratory illness, heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmias and other cardiovascular conditions. Vulnerable groups include children, pregnant women, older adults and individuals with pre‑existing asthma or heart disease. The WHO reports that 99 % of the world’s population breathes air that exceeds recommended quality levels.
In response to the growing need for public awareness, the cooperative card game VisionAir was developed by researchers at the Universidad Miguel Hernández. The game simulates real‑world air‑quality challenges such as traffic congestion, industrial emissions, heat waves and photochemical smog, and encourages players to adopt solutions like active mobility, public transit, renewable energy and reforestation. By fostering collaborative decision‑making, VisionAir aims to educate participants about the complex interactions that affect air quality and the long‑term benefits of coordinated action.
Health experts advise monitoring the Air Quality Index, staying indoors during severe pollution episodes, using HEPA filters, and wearing N95 masks when exposure cannot be avoided. These precautionary steps, combined with broader societal efforts illustrated in VisionAir, are essential for protecting vulnerable populations and improving overall air quality.
