Air quality monitoring in Bavaria uses pollutant index

Air quality monitoring in Bavaria utilizes the Air Quality Index provided by the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt). This index categorizes air quality into five levels, ranging from ‘very good’ to ‘very bad’, based on data from hundreds of measurement stations across Germany.

The index is determined by the pollutant with the worst value at any given location. Key pollutants monitored include particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone. The agency sets limit values for these substances based on recommendations from the World Health Organization.

Air pollution remains a significant environmental health risk in Europe, with potential links to cardiovascular diseases, respiratory issues, diabetes, dementia, and cancer. While some locations in Germany monitor sulfur dioxide (SO2), no such measurements are currently conducted in Bavaria.
