AIR-STEMI study seeks to optimize heart attack treatment
The AIR-STEMI international clinical study, coordinated by the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy, is investigating new methods to treat heart attack patients. The project, led by the Cardiology Unit of the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria di Ferrara, aims to determine which coronary arteries truly require treatment following a STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) to prevent unnecessary stent placements and interventions.
Unlike traditional angiography, which only measures the degree of arterial narrowing, the AIR-STEMI strategy incorporates a functional assessment of blood flow. This approach seeks to identify whether a narrowing actually restricts blood flow to the heart. The study involves over 1,800 patients who have experienced a life-threatening sudden coronary closure.
