Air travel grows between Barcelona and Madrid amid rail challenges

Air travel is gaining ground in the transport market between Barcelona and Madrid as rail travel faces challenges. Data from Aena shows a 6% increase in flights between El Prat and Barajas from January to July compared to the previous year.

In contrast, the rail corridor saw a decrease of over half a million users between March and June compared to the same period last year. High-speed rail services have been impacted by speed limitations following accidents in Adamuz and Gelida, which increased travel times by 25 minutes. Additionally, technical issues with Talgo trains led Renfe to temporarily withdraw certain low-cost Avlo offers, contributing to price fluctuations.

While rail maintains a dominant market share of over 80%—with Renfe's AVE holding 60%, Iryo 25%, and Ouigo 15%—Vueling has announced it will resume operations on the Barcelona-Madrid route starting October 5 to meet unmet demand caused by the current state of high-speed rail services.
