European airlines pet travel policies ranked by AirAdvisor

A new ranking by AirAdvisor has analyzed the pet travel policies of 22 European airlines, highlighting significant differences in how dogs and cats can travel. Most airlines allow pets in the cabin if the animal and carrier combined weigh under 8kg.

Aegean Airlines offers cabin travel for pets starting at €35 for domestic Greek flights, while Air France charges between €70 and €250. Austrian Airlines permits up to two animals in the cabin under the 8kg limit, and Brussels Airlines also allows two small pets. Finnair provides pet transport in both the cabin and the hold across all routes. For larger animals, Lufthansa charges between €80 and €380 for transport in the hold.

The study notes several restrictions: certain breeds like bulldogs and pugs often face additional requirements due to respiratory issues, and animals under 12 weeks are generally prohibited from flying. Additionally, premium and business class cabins are typically less pet-friendly, and travelers should be cautious with codeshare flights or connections involving different carriers.
