AirAsia Philippines secures new investment for fleet expansion
AirAsia Philippines has secured a new investor to support its upcoming fleet expansion and network growth. AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes is expected to travel to Manila to finalize discussions with the undisclosed shareholder. The investment follows a period of restructuring and scale reduction for the airline and is intended to provide resources for aviation-related fees and operating obligations.
The airline plans to begin receiving Airbus A220 aircraft in 2028, which will replace its retiring A320 fleet. The A220 is expected to offer greater flexibility for domestic and regional operations, including access to airports with shorter runways.
Separately, AirAsia Group Berhad has reaffirmed its long-term strategy amid global geopolitical uncertainty. CEO Bo Lingam stated the group is maintaining a disciplined approach by adjusting capacity and controlling costs. The group is also optimizing its fleet by returning older, less fuel-efficient aircraft and transitioning toward more efficient narrowbody models to reduce lease burdens and improve efficiency.
