AirAsia seeks $1 billion to restructure debt amid liquidity pressures
AirAsia Group Berhad is pursuing a massive fundraising campaign of up to $1.00 billion in international debt markets, supplemented by RM700 million in local credit lines, to restructure and refinance existing debt. The move aims to reduce financing costs and address significant liquidity pressures.
The airline has faced substantial financial challenges, reporting a net loss of RM831 million in the second quarter of 2026. This downturn was driven largely by a 58% surge in fuel costs and RM331 million in net foreign-exchange losses caused by weakening regional currencies against the U.S. dollar. As of June 30, 2026, the group reported cash reserves of RM954 million against short-term liabilities of RM18.40 billion.
Despite these pressures, CEO Bo Lingam has rejected rumors of a potential closure, stating that operations will continue as normal and aircraft deliveries will proceed as planned. Lingam emphasized that the business generates daily cash flow and ruled out the need for a state bailout.
