airBaltic files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US

Latvian national carrier airBaltic has voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York to restructure its finances. The move follows significant financial pressure caused by rising jet fuel prices, linked to geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.

A US court has approved the airline's initial motions, allowing it to immediately access a first installment of 140 million euros from a total 350 million euro financing commitment. This funding, organized by Strategic Value Partners and involving institutions like Barclays, Morgan Stanley, and Oaktree Capital Management, is intended to ensure operational liquidity during the restructuring process.

As part of its long-term business plan, airBaltic intends to reduce its fleet size and lower operating costs. The company aims to complete the restructuring process by June 2027. Despite the legal proceedings, the airline has assured passengers that all scheduled flights, existing tickets, and services will continue as normal, with no immediate impact on operational reliability or safety.
