Airbnb adds independent hotels to its app, offering guest credits

Airbnb has begun listing thousands of boutique and independent hotels within its mobile app, initially launching in about twenty cities with plans to expand further. The hotels are curated by Airbnb and are not listed by owners, allowing the platform to control visibility and remove listings at any time. Guests who book a featured hotel receive a credit of up to 15 % toward a future Airbnb stay, positioning the hotel rooms as an acquisition cost for the company's core home‑rental business.

The move reflects Airbnb’s shift from its original “alternative to hotels” stance toward becoming an “everything‑app,” aiming to keep travelers within its ecosystem for accommodations, transportation, groceries and other services. CEO Brian Chesky described the change as the app becoming an agent for the traveler, signalling a broader strategic pivot in the travel market.
