Airbnb expands focus to include independent and boutique hotels
Airbnb is shifting its strategic focus toward the hotel sector, specifically targeting independent and boutique properties. CEO Brian Chesky stated that while the company’s original slogan was ‘Forget hotels’, user demand has prompted a more practical approach to growth.
Chesky aims to capture market share from major players like Booking.com and Expedia by offering independent hotels lower commissions and access to a younger demographic. The company plans to introduce thousands of such properties across 20 major global destinations, including New York, Paris, London, Madrid, Rome, and Singapore. These selections will prioritize unique locations, design, and character over large corporate chains.
While hotel bookings currently represent only a single-digit percentage of Airbnb’s total reservations, the segment is growing faster than the company’s core business. Data indicates that nearly 4,000 such properties were already being utilized across several hundred markets as of September.
